The Southern California College of Optometry, previously the Los Angeles School of Ophthalmology and Optometry, located in Fullerton, started 1904 and is one of the oldest optometry schools in the United States. The private college offers a Doctor of Optometry degree through rigorous education in classes, and through various clinical rotations to teach students in a variety of areas. The SCCO also has 16 different postdoctoral residency programs, a variety of vision research, and continuing education courses to keep optometrists up to date. In fact, one of the requirements for graduation is a research project.
The SCCO has a class size of around 100 students, and for the class entering 2011-2012 there were 604 applicants, with 100 enrolling in the optometry program. Out of those enrolled, the mean overall GPA was 3.38 and the mean OAT score for Total Sciences was 332.
The annual tuition for the 2011-2012 academic year was $30,615 for all students, because it is a private college. This comes out to a total of $122,460 for the Doctor of Optometry program, without fees, cost of books, equipment, living expenses, and other costs. The estimated cost for the 4 years, including all additional cost and living expenses, was set at $199,456. Please check the school for updated and accurate tuition and fees.
The SCCO requires applicants to have, or will have a bachelor’s degree by the time they are enrolled into the Doctor of Optometry program. There is also an early decision option for students in their junior year that will enroll them the following year, after receiving their bachelor’s degree. All applicants must meet the SCCO’s prerequisite courses with a grade of ’C’ or better, that include basic courses like Calculus, Anatomy and Physiology, Biology, Chemistry, and Microbiology.
