Located in Bloomington, the Indiana University School of Optometry was established in 1951, and started out offering students a Master of Optometry degree. The school has now grown, with the addition of the Indianapolis Eye Care Center (IECC) and the Borish Center for Ophthalmic Research, both offering experience and training to optometry students. The optometry school currently offers 3 degrees, Doctor of Optometry (O.D.), Associate of Science as an Optician, and a MS and PhD in Vision Science.
The Indiana University School of Optometry is very competitive, and compared to other optometry schools in enrollment, falls somewhere in the middle averaging around 70-80 students per year. The class entering the 2011-2012 year consisted of 77 students from a group of 377 applicants, with 74 out of the 77 having a Bachelors degree before entering the optometry program. The mean GPA and OAT score for Total Sciences was 3.54 and 320 respectively.
Tuition
The tuition for the 2011-2012 academic year for O.D. students is set at a flat fee of $10,692.86 for residents and $17,426.42 for nonresidents per term for 8 credit hours or more. The curriculum is 4 years long with 2 terms for the first 3 years and a one course summer session during the 2nd year. The 4th year consists of 40 hours of clinical rotation. This comes out to over $75,000 for residents and $122,000 for non residents, without the cost of books, equipment, living expenses, or other costs. Education Requirements
The Indiana University School of Optometry does not require applicants to have a Bachelors degree, but does require them to have at least 90 semester hours with the completion of pre-optometry courses set by the school. These courses include Biology, Microbiology, 2 Organic Chemistry, Statistical Techniques, and Physics. Those without a degree receive a Bachelor of Science in Optometry after two years in the program.
