University of the Incarnate Word School of Optometry UIWSO
The University of the Incarnate Word has been around quite a while. Founded by the Sisters of Charity in 1881, it has developed an Optometry program that started in the Fall of 2009, with "Preliminary Approval" for accreditation from the Accreditation Council on Optometric Education. Located in the medical center area of San Antonio, the School of Optometry has two state of the art clinical facilities, and is currently the only faith based school of optometry in the Unites States. The school, being relatively new, offers a Doctor of Optometry and a Bachelors in Vision Science. With the Fall of 2009 being the first year for the UIWSO’s optometry program, the expected class size is around 60 students. TuitionTuition at the University of the Incarnate Word School of Optometry for the 2009-2010 academic year was set at $27,000, with required fees of $955. Education RequirementsThe UIWSO does not require applicants to have a Bachelors degree, but requires at least 90 semester hours from an accredited institution, with prerequisites courses met with a grade o f ’C’ or better. These courses include English, General Psychology, Statistics, Calculus, and Chemistry with Lab, Biology with Lab, Humanities, and Behavioral & Social Sciences. The school also recommends perspective students to have an overall GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, and an overall OAT score of at least 300. Admissions Checklist
