Primary Care Optometry Residency
Primary eye care optometry residency programs generally offer a wide spectrum of training and education through clinical experience under supervision and didactic lectures. A residency in primary care offers the resident broad experience in multi-disciplinary clinical settings that can include a hospital, a clinic, or a small or medium sized eye care office, and dealing with a diverse group of patients. Residents gain experience through primary care to patients including diagnosis, management, and treatment of eye conditions and ocular diseases under supervision from optometrists, physicians, ophthalmologists, and other professionals. Residents also gain leadership and communication skills by supervising optometry students, teaching classes, participating in grand round lectures and discussions, maybe even writing their own paper to be published or joining a current research project. Although primary care is vast category, some residencies also offer sub-specialty training in other areas like geriatrics, low vision, and ocular disease. All this education and hands on training is designed to give residents knowledge on primary eye care in various settings involving a diverse patients and staff.
