Ocular Disease Residency
Residencies classified under the ocular disease category provide the majority of training and education in eye related diseases including glaucoma, retinal detachment, and other serious eye diseases that can require surgery. Residents examine patients, many with ocular diseases, and co-manage patients before and after surgical procedures. Some residents are offered the opportunity to watch surgical procedures and are exposed to state of the art diagnostic processes like ultrasonography and retinal tomography that are not generally used in private practice. Residents will gain advanced training through hands on approaches like grand rounds, participation in class room settings, and supervision of those under them. Residents can expect a broad range of eye diseases, methodology for diagnosis and treatment, and working with a variety of other professionals that specialize in fields like retina, neuro-ophthalmology, and pediatrics. Ocular disease residencies provide advanced training for private office diagnosis, as well as other settings like a hospital or clinic where the job requirements for an optometrist may be encompassing lots of other duties including helping with surgical care.
