Residency Description:

The objective of this residency is to enhance the clinical experience and knowledge in primary care optometry with emphasis on the delivery of all aspects of eye care to a Hispanic-based population. This residency also provides the opportunity of gaining language proficiency in both clinic examination and conversational Spanish. The residency offers a unique experience with the Mexican culture as well as the health care delivery systems for an indigent patient base in a developing country. The resident will receive intensive clinical training in the diagnosis and management of ocular and systemic-related ocular disease in addition to advanced training in fitting keratoconic RGP contacts, pediatric eye care, binocular vision therapy, and low vision. The location of the residency is at the singularly unique clinic combining optometry and ophthalmology (American and Mexican). Because of the unique joint practice, the program will offer observations in ophthalmic surgeries as well as interaction with retinal specialists on a daily basis. The resident will also have experience in writing medical lab orders as well as imaging.
