Family Practice Optometry Residency
Optometry residency programs in family practice are designed to provide balanced training through clinicals, education, and leaderships roles to give the resident more experience and preparation in opening up a practice in an urban environment. An urban environment is diverse in patients and eye problems, and residencies provide training through diagnosis, treatment, and management of patients under supervision. Residents are usually given hands on training by dealing with patients at the start, and managing their cases till the end in cases of certain eye conditions and diseases, which is what is expected in their own practice. Residents can expect to deal with common eye problems such as vision changes to complicated issues, and such as detecting eye diseases like cataracts, glaucoma, and removing debris from the cornea. Residents are also exposed to a diverse age range of patients and may also be taught medical record documentation, billing and coding according to Medicare and Vision plans, and other details relating to practice management. Residents gain leaderships skills through clinical supervising, teaching positions, researching, and leading other areas.
