Cornea and Contact Lenses Residency
Optometry residencies in cornea and contact lenses help develop skills regarding the cornea and dealing with primary care in contact lenses. Residents will receive supervised training and supervise students themselves in clinical and classroom settings. Residents should see a diverse amount of patients with vision problems that deal with contact lenses or corneal or exterior diseases. Expect a lot of contact lens exams, fittings, refits, and follow-ups for common eye problems like myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism, and presbyopia. Residents should also be exposed to eye diseases that affect the exterior of the eye or the corneal region, and will deal with patient management through diagnosis, assessment, and possibly treatment. Residents may see patients who have had surgery to open up drainage holes or those who have had Lasik surgery. Residents may also deal with special cases like keratoconus, post-operative cornea treatments, corneal reshaping, and even prosthetic lenses. Residents will still go through similar training through didactic education, teaching classes, participating in group discussions or seminars, research projects, and other planned educational functions. An optometrist who has finished a residency program here can move on to many other opportunities including research, specialist positions, or other job offerings coming from the many contact lens companies worldwide.
