Residency Description: This program provides advanced clinical experience in the diagnosis and management of ocular disease in both referral center and hospital-based settings. The resident spends most of his/her time at BVA West, an integral part of a multidisciplinary medical center in Elk City. The resident also spends time at NSU College of Optometry and the W.W. Hastings Indian Health Service Hospital in Tahlequah. A strong emphasis is placed on pre- and post-operative care and the appropriate use of topical and systemic medications as well as other modalities in the treatment of ocular disease. Additional emphasis is placed on retinal care through retinal specialists as well as on literature review and study. A research paper or case report is required, and paper presentation or publication is encouraged. Teaching is another important aspect of this program, with opportunities to become involved in didactic and clinical education of optometry students, optometrists, and other health care providers.
