Residency Description:
The residency training program in ophthalmology is designed to provide a graduated experience leading to independent responsibility in the medical and surgical management of ocular disease. The purpose is to train physicians in such a manner that at the completion of their residency they have acquired clinical skill in the diagnosis and management of ophthalmic patients with all types of medical and surgical disease. Through experience obtained in the operating rooms, both as assistant and responsible surgeon, the resident is expected to have the technical proficiency required for surgical competence.
The program is designed to lead to certification by the American Board of Ophthalmology. The educational program continues throughout the three years of the residency. A basic course in ophthalmology included in the residency program which consists of three hours of lectures Saturday mornings throughout the academic year and attendance at these lectures is mandatory. Seminars, clinical conferences, and lectures are mandatory. Seminars, clinical conferences and lectures are given by the attending staff throughout the week.
