Residency Description: The Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences offers a three-year approved residency training program in conjunction with the Nebraska Medical Center and the Omaha Veterans Affairs Medical Center.During the first two years of training, the resident has in-depth exposure to the specialties of retina, uveitis, cornea and external diseases, low vision, oculoplastics, neuro-ophthalmology, glaucoma and pediatric ophthalmology, as well as an introduction to ophthalmic surgery. Residents during their subspecialty rotations have the opportunity to participate in the medical and surgical care of these patients. During the third year, the resident's medical and surgical experience is further augmented by integration of the Veterans Affairs Medical Center into the training program. The resident assumes full responsibility for the medical and surgical care of VA patients with all types of ophthalmic diseases. Each senior resident typically performs over 280 Class I surgical cases where they are the primary surgeon. Refractive surgical training is provided as part of the Midwest Academic Refractive Consortium.
