Residency Description:
The Ophthalmology Residency Program is a fully accredited three-year program leading to eligibility for certification by the American Board of Ophthalmology.
Each first-year resident spends one month at the Basic Science Course at the University of Texas Medical School in Houston, Texas.Clinical rotations are provided at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital (SNGH), Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters, and the Veterans Administration (VA) Medical Center. SNGH is the primary teaching hospital of the Department of Ophthalmology. The resident to population ratio is one resident per 247,000, so clinics are busy.
All residents are assigned to subspecialty clinics. SNGH, a level-one trauma center, provides experience with major ocular and orbital trauma, and all aspects of tertiary referral ophthalmology.
